Dead Letters – Joan Lock
Joan’s first two books described the time she spent working as a policewoman and as a nurse. When she took up writing crime fiction, these experiences helped shape her characters such as the charismatic Detective Inspector Best and the dour Chief Inspector Cheadle. Her keen interest in the details of police history adds a layer of authenticity to her stories.
It is a beautiful summer’s day in 1880: perfect weather for the annual Metropolitan Police Fete held at the Alexandra Palace. Inspector Best is summoned to uncover the identity of ‘Quicksilver’ , who has sent an anonymous note threating to cause a horrific explosion at the event. A second note is then received, but its threats are made confusing by their literary allusions. so Best seeks the help of Helen Franks, a close friend from the past. However, is Quicksilver really intent on causing mass injury on this fine day, or is this desire of a more personal nature?
