Fiona Sussman

Formerly a family doctor, Fiona hung up her stethoscope in 2003 to pursue another long-held dream, to write.
Now an internationally-published novelist and short-story writer living in New Zealand, her writing has won a number of awards, including the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel 2017, the NZ Booklovers Award for Best Adult Fiction 2021, and the Sunday Star Times Short Story Award 2018. Her work has also been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize and the NZ Heritage Prize.
Fiona’s fourth novel, The Doctor’s Wife, (titled In Sickness and In Health in the UK) was named one of the top 100 Books of 2022 by the NZ Listener and was a finalist in the 2024 Ngaio Marsh Awards for Best Crime Novel.
Fiona, who has a Master of Creative Writing, also enjoys mentoring other writers and teaching creative writing.
