Sandra Hempel

Sub-genre: ,

Sandra Hempel is a journalist, copy writer and editor, specialising in health and social issues. She has worked for many national newspapers and magazines, including The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian and The Mail on Sunday as well as for specialist health publications including The Lancet and the British Medical Journal.

Her books use the journalistic device of finding a strong human interest story in order to explain a breakthrough in medical science for a non-specialist readership. Her first book The Medical Detective tells the story of the doctor John Snow who discovered the cause of the great cholera epidemics that killed 100,000 people in Britain in the 19th century and his struggle to have his ideas accepted.

Her second book, The Inheritor’s Powder, published in June 2013, uses a real-life murder mystery that happened in 1833 to look at criminal arsenic poisoning and the development of forensic toxicology.
