John Gemmell
Sub-genre: gangster
I spent almost 33 years working for an International FMCG company in drinks and hospitality before pivoting and following my passion as a story teller. In drinks I had a huge network to reach out to if I needed help. I found the creative process to be really stimulating, but the art of publishing is a minefield. I realised I was on my own, so joining like minded people here feels very supportive.
My novel The Dogs of Avarice is fundamentally about one of the seven deadly sins.
Avarice was historically the pre-eminent word for greed, but it has fallen out of favour these days. It is the extreme end of greed, probably the most sinful of all. It’s when a sense of entitlement collides with the need to be wealthy. Slowly, inch by inch, it permeates your world, destroys your perspective in the pursuit of your lifestyle. If you add narcissism into the mix, you enter despot territory. Perhaps the word avarice should make a reappearance, given the modern world that we live in.’
