I write the Aurelia Marcella novels, set long ago in Roman Britain. Aurelia runs an inn on the road to York in the days when Britannia was a raw frontier province of the mighty Roman Empire, and we see life (and death) through her eyes. She just wants to live a peaceful life, but she gets drawn into solving crimes affecting both Roman settlers and native British tribes. Some of her adventures are in short story form too. But writing shorter mysteries allows me to step out of the ancient world occasionally: for example into the corporate business jungle of modern London, or to the peaceful country garden of a little girl.
I live in Yorkshire near the coast, with my husband Richard and our cocker spaniel Rosie. It’s a grand spot, but we enjoy travelling too – out of the question this past year – so we’re hoping for better times once the horrible COVID pandemic is over.
