Roger Corke is a TV journalist who, for more years than he cares to remember, has been travelling the world making investigative documentaries for flagship current affairs series like the BBC’s Panorama, ITV’s World In Action and Tonight and Channel 4’s Dispatches.
In his debut crime thriller, Deadly Protocol, a scientist working on the Holy Grail of medicine – a universal cure for cancer – is found brutally murdered. Who killed him and why?
Roger began writing it after a chance conversation with a scientist whilst he was filming in America. The man was working at the cutting edge of cancer research and explained what extraordinary advances had taken place over the last few years in our understanding of this terrible disease.
Roger asked the obvious, if naïve, question: “Does that mean we are near to curing cancer?”
The scientist replied, “Well, it’s possible that they’ve already found a cure but an awful lot of people would have a lot to lose if a cure for cancer ever saw the light of day.”
Deadly Protocol would never have been written were it not for that chance conversation with the scientist…that and the donation of a kidney to a complete stranger, but that’s another story…
During his career, Roger has made a number of ground-breaking true crime documentaries, including three examining the case of Derek Bentley, who was hanged in 1953 for the murder of a policeman. Evidence collected by him and a colleague led to the case being sent back to the Court of Appeal, which finally quashed the conviction and brought some justice for his family.
Roger is now writing the sequel to Deadly Protocol, called Deadly Messages.
