Jan Newton

Sub-genre:

Jan Newton grew up in Manchester and Derbyshire, spending her formative years with her nose in a book or on the back of a pony, exploring the hills and moorland around her home. She lived and worked in London and Buckinghamshire for 19 years before moving to mid Wales in 2005, where she learnt to speak Welsh. In 2015 she graduated with a Masters in Creative Writing from Swansea University.

She read her first crime novel at the age of eight, having devoured The Bobbsey Twins, Black Beauty and everything ever written by Enid Blyton and CS Lewis. Agatha Christie’s 4.5o From Paddington probably wasn’t entirely suitable for an eight year old, but her grandmother felt that an early grounding in crime novels would be of lifelong benefit. Grateful thanks are due to both formidable ladies.

Jan has won several writing competitions including the Allen Raine Short Story Competition, the WI Lady Denman Cup and the Oriel Davies Gallery competition for nature writing. She has been published in New Welsh Review.
