Case Files 10: Forgotten Classic

7th June 2014

Imogen Robertson talks about Highways and Byways – a book she thinks everyone should read.

Actually Highways and Byways is a series of books published in the first half of the twentieth century by Macmillan and I’m slowly collecting them all. They are basically travel books about different counties in England. Each one seems to involve a young man on a bicycle making a leisurely progress around the county observing and recording countryside, people, stories, legends and places of interest he finds.  They are full of very beautiful engravings and there are ideas for about a dozen novels in each one. Macmillan republished a selection from these volumes in 2009, but I’m still loyal to the original blue and gold hardbacks: whenever I find one in a second hand book shop, I pounce.
